SARTELL -- Sartell bars and restaurants who sell alcohol will be subject to compliance checks in the coming months and the Sartell Police Department has secured a grant to help pay for it.

Compliance checks are where an officer sends an underage buyer into the bar to try to buy alcohol. If the business fails to card the minor, and serves them alcohol, the server is charged with a gross misdemeanor and the bar receives a civil fine.

Police Chief Jim Hughes says the grant will pay $30 for each of the 14 license holders they have in the city.

Hughes says they conduct two compliance checks per year.  The last compliance check resulted in all 14 licnse holders passing the sting. A second compliance check will be done after the first of the year.
