The Sartell-St. Stephen Sabres defeated the Moorhead Spuds 24-19 Saturday night for the Section 8-5A championship.

Sartell got the ball to start the game and drove 66 yards to the Moorhead eight yard line before settling for a Riley Isaacson field goal and a 3-0 lead.

Jackson Miller pulled in a 20 yard touchdown pass from Brandon Snoberger and Isaacson converted the extra point for a 10-0 Sabre lead early in the second quarter.

The Spuds got on the board early in the third quarter when Jade Lawrence found the end zone to make the score 10-7 in favor of Sartell.

However, Sabres running back Derek Stachowski scored his 20th touchdown of the season later in the third quarter to increase Sartell's lead to 17-7.

Following a Moorhead fumble, Alex Haima tipped a pass from Snoberger to himself and came down in the end zone for a 20 yard touchdown and a 24-7 lead.

The Spuds would score again, then come within five points with another quick touchdown on a pass from Eidsness with 2:25 left in the fourth. The two point conversion pass was no good.

The Spuds attempted an onside kick with only one timeout left, but Sam Neeser came away with the ball for Sartell. However, the Sabres were forced to punt to the Spuds, who drove into Sartell territory with 1:30 on the clock.

In the end, Eidsness made an ill-fated attempt into the end zone that was intercepted by the Sartell defense to essentially end the game with fifty seconds on the clock.

The Sabres advance to play St. Michael-Albertville at 7 pm Thursday at St. Cloud State.
