SARTELL -- Would you like to have your own solar garden in your backyard? Sartell residents may have that option.

During tonight's (Monday) Planning Commission meeting, the board discussed the possibility of changing the city's solar ordinance to allow for private residents and businesses to build solar gardens.

The current ordinance allows solar gardens to be used commercially, where the energy is sold to a resident or business, but operated by a commercial dealer such as Xcel Energy.

Several board members were in support of the idea. They felt if they were to change the ordinance it should be as proactive as possible but follow certain guidelines.

No action was taken at this time.

The Planning Commission suggested staff look at cleaning up the ordinance language to accommodate residents to have a solar garden and bring back some guidelines to review at their next meeting.
