Football rivals Sartell and St. Cloud Tech are teaming up Friday night to Tackle Cancer.

The teams are working together to raise money for the Randy Shaver Cancer and Research Community's "Tackle Cancer" program Friday night at Husky Stadium on the campus of St. Cloud State University.

Last season, the Tackle Cancer program raised over $233,000 for cancer research.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. with tailgating outside of Husky Stadium, with fans invited to join the festivities until 6:30. Kickoff between Sartell and Tech is scheduled for 7 p.m.

During the game four team-signed Tackle Cancer footballs will be raffled off, with each team providing two footballs. Tickets for the raffle will be sold at both the tailgate party and during the game itself.

Both schools are also selling t-shirts for $10 featuring both teams' logos, as well as the names of the former coaches being honored.

At halftime, fans will have the opportunity to make a cash donation with the customary "passing of the helmet," which is a staple at all Tackle Cancer games.

Tech Activities Director Andrea Swanberg says joining forces was the brainchild of the coaches.

"Gregg Martig (Tech) and Scott Hentges (Sartell) were the ones to get together for this Tackle Cancer game," Swanberg said. "I believe they have done this in the past as well because both of our programs have lost head coaches to cancer- Don Nylund, Ron Kaczor and Dean Taylor, plus so many families are affected by it, it seems natural to do this with Sartell."

"We are honoring three former head coaches," Martig said. "Teams are coming together, booster clubs, they are creating t-shirts and doing some things to help support the Shaver Cancer Fund which has really gone over well in high school football."

fund," Hentges said.

The game itself has some added intrigue as well, with former Tech running back Devin Vouk now lining up with the Sabres adding fuel to an already big rivalry.

"It comes down to each team has things they need to execute," Hentges said. "We can't worry too much about the periphery things."

"All the games in the metro area are big rivalry games," Martig said. "I think that's great, you get great crowds and there's a lot of positive competition between the groups."

"I think the players and coaches take a lot of pride (in the metro matchups) in how you do against those teams each year," Martig said. "If you look what's gone on the last couple years, a play here or there makes a lot of difference. We are certainly looking forward to the challenge."

Friday's game can also be heard on AM 1390 KXSS with Dave Overlund and Josh Fiedler calling the action. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 p.m.
