ROCHESTER (AP) - Inspired by their ancestors, the owners of a Rochester bakery start the new year by providing 1,000 loaves of free bread.

It's the fifth year the Fish family has offered free bread to anyone who wants it. The family operates the Gingerbread House Bakery. Fourth-generation baker Mike Fish says it takes four straight days of baking 250 loaves to finish the job.

Fish says the give-away renews an old tradition the family discovered in a photo from 1920. Fish's great-grandfather began the practice at his bakery in Winona.
