July 24, 1929 - August 19, 2016

 

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at the Westwood Community Church in St. Cloud, MN for Robert Rantz Berg age 87 of Waite Park, MN. He died on Friday, August 19, 2016 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN. Pastor Steve Schoepf will be officiating. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery, St. Cloud, MN.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud, MN, and also one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday at the church. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by VFW Granite Post 428 of St. Cloud.

Bob was born the son of Carl F. and Hepzibah (Rantz) Berg on July 24, 1929 in Sioux City, IA. As a young boy he moved with his family to South Minneapolis, MN where he attended school and grew to adulthood. As a young man he enlisted into the United States Navy, serving his country as a corpsman for 4 years including some time in Korea.

Upon return to civilian life he went to work as a Loss Prevention Specialist, working for many different insurance companies over the years. He eventually ended his working career as a Deputy State Fire Marshal.

On June 1, 1979 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Carlen in St. Cloud. He was a 54 year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and sang in numerous quartets and choruses. He was a long time member of the St. Cloud Singing Saints. One of Robert’s highlights each year was attending the Minnesota State Fair, which he did for 80 plus years. He was also an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He and Dorothy enjoyed their travels to Mexico many winters.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister Mary Lampman and one brother Carl Berg, and one grandson Daniel Berg.

He is survived by; his wife, Dorothy of Waite Park, MN; son, Brian of St. Cloud, MN, daughter, Lisa Berg of Sauk Rapids, MN, and son, Jim (Patty) Carlen of St. Paul, MN, nine grandchildren, Rebekah Berg, Brennan “Rex" Berg, Zachary Boie, Megan Boie, Cameron Boie, Samuel Carlen, Peter Carlen and William Carlen, great granddaughter, Maycee Andersen, along with other relatives and many friends.
