RICHMOND -- Richmond Mayor Scott Kron has announced his resignation nearly six months before his term was set to expire. Kron gave his formal notice to City Administrator Martin Bode yesterday stating personal health reasons.

Kron was elected mayor in 2012 and before that he served as a council member. His resignation is effective immediately. Bode says he wishes Kron well.

The city council will decide tonight how they plan to fill the mayor's seat. Bode says it's possible that the council will table the decision until their next meeting.

The council must follow a set of state and city guidelines. They can choose to appoint a council member to the position or they can appoint a community member to the mayor's seat. If they appoint a council member they would then need to formally declare a vacancy for that council seat.

Bode says he believes the council will likely appoint acting mayor Mike Mathiasen to the mayor's seat. Mathiasen's council term is set to expire on December 31st, 2014.
