ST. JOSEPH (AP) — A four-term Democratic state lawmaker from St. Joseph says he won't seek re-election this year.

State Rep. Larry Hosch says he wants to spend more time with his family, especially his two young sons.

His announcement comes one day after Cold Spring police Chief Phil Jones said he'd run for the state House as a Republican in the same district.

Hosch says his decision to leave the Legislature was difficult but necessary. He didn't rule out another run for office later.

Hosch was elected mayor of St. Joseph in 2000 and was elected to the state House of Representatives four years later for the first of four terms.

His House district covers St. Joseph, Cold Spring, Richmond, Paynesville, Avon, Collegeville and Kimball.
