MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Authorities say treacherous currents are hampering the search for a car that went into the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis.

Major Darrell Huggett of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office says a jogger reported a car in the river around 9 a.m. Sunday. A Minneapolis police officer saw it sink. But he says authorities still didn’t know by mid-afternoon if anybody was inside.

Huggett told reporters a buoy was placed in the approximate place where the car went under, and investigators were using a boat towing a side-scanning sonar device to try to find the car. He says they opted not to send down divers until they find it because of the dangerous currents.

The location is downstream from the 10th Avenue Bridge, near the University of Minnesota campus.
