Regulators Pull Plug On Minnesota Wind Farm Proposal

ST. PAUL (AP) — State regulators have pulled the plug on a wind farm proposed for southeastern Minnesota that’s drawn opposition because of the danger it could pose to eagles and bats.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission voted unanimously Thursday not to extend the company’s legal authority to build the wind farm in Goodhue County.

The developer, New Era, had sought to build a 78-megawatt wind farm near Zumbrota. But opponents raised concerns about the impact on birds and bats that might run into turbine blades.

New Era’s attorney, Todd Guerrero, says the developer could try to revive the $180 million project after resolving legal issues with Xcel Energy Inc.

Guerrero says the PUC’s action “doesn’t necessarily kill the project, but it doesn’t help.”
