FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) - A man accused of fatally shooting his father in Fergus Falls has been ordered to have a psychological exam.

Twenty-eight-year-old Dustin Defiel is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 56-year-old Rick Defiel. He's being held in the Otter Tail County Jail on $1 million bond. Defiel refused to speak in court and appeared without an attorney.

A criminal complaint says family members had feared for their safety and had limited contact with Defiel in recent years. The complaint says Defiel went to his parents' home last Wednesday night, shot his father in the back and head.

Authorities say Defiel's mother locked herself in a bathroom and pleaded with her son to spare her. She was able to call police from her cell phone.
