EAGAN (AP) - Authorities have charged a 17-year-old driver who they say read a text message and caused a crash that left a toddler with a traumatic brain injury.

The Shakopee girl is charged in Dakota County juvenile court with a felony count of criminal vehicular operation as well as misdemeanor careless driving. The 1-year-old boy in the other vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries in the July wreck in Eagan. He underwent surgery for serious head injuries.

The toddler's mother and her passenger were injured and treated at hospitals.

The teenager tells authorities she was going to school after sleeping for three hours. She says she was reading a text message on her phone when she turned and struck the oncoming car.

Authorities haven't released her name or the injured people's names.
