Prosecutor, 2 Others Shot at Minnesota Courthouse

GRAND MARAIS (AP) - A defendant in a sexual misconduct trial is accused of opening fire in a small northern Minnesota courthouse and wounding three people, including the local prosecutor.

Authorities say 42-year-old Daniel Schlienz was arrested shortly after the shootings Thursday at the Cook County Courthouse in Grand Marais, a remote town near the Canadian border.

A Department of Public Safety spokesman says prosecutor Timothy Scannell and another victim were talking before they were taken to hospitals. The third victim was treated and released.

A spokeswoman for the Duluth hospital says Scannell suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Schlienz's trial was on Thursday's court calendar. He'd been charged with criminal sexual conduct and nonconsensual sex contact.

Schlienz's father says his son recently threatened suicide and "hated the prosecuting attorney."
