Precinct Protest Results In $900K In Police Overtime

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Records show Minneapolis police officers accumulated more than $900,000 in overtime during the protests outside a precinct station last year.

Public records that show total costs to the city topped $1 million, including more than $58,000 for fencing, lighting, scaffolding and repairs to damaged property at the 4th District precinct.

Demonstrators protesting the deadly police shooting of Jamar Clark set up an encampment outside the station for 18 days. The protests were mainly peaceful, but were peppered by some violent interactions with police.

Republican state Rep. Nick Zerwas has introduced legislation that would hold protesters civilly liable if they are convicted of unlawful assembly or other crimes involving protests.
