ST. PAUL (AP) - St. Paul police say they've reopened the avenue in front of Minnesota's official Governor's Residence, which had been shut by protesters since shortly after a suburban police officer fatally shot a black man.

Police spokesman Steve Linders says officers at 6 a.m. Monday informed protesters they would no longer be allowed to occupy Summit Avenue. But he says they were told they're welcome to continue protesting on the sidewalk as long as they don't impede vehicles or pedestrians, and as long as they don't put up structures.

Linders says protesters voluntarily removed their belongings. He says everything was peaceful and nobody was arrested or cited.

Protesters have been gathered outside the mansion since 32-year -old Philando Castile was killed earlier this month by a St. Anthony officer in Falcon Heights.
