MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was processed overnight and released from a jail in Texas, where he faces charges alleging that he used a switch to spank one of his sons.

A Montgomery County jail records official who declined to give her name, citing a department policy, says Peterson turned himself in early Saturday and was later released.

Peterson's attorney, Rusty Hardin, said Friday that the Vikings star is charged with causing injury to a child.

He says the charge alleges that Peterson used a switch to discipline the boy, whose age wasn't disclosed.

The Vikings said Peterson will not play in the team's home opener Sunday against the New England Patriots.
