BIG LAKE - (AP) - Service on the Northstar commuter rail line is cancelled after a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train derailed and blocked the tracks between Big Lake and Ramsey.

Metro Transit canceled the Northstar service early Friday after about 16 empty BNSF freight cars jumped the tracks. There were no injuries.

Metro Transit offered limited bus service from Elk River, Ramsey, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Fridley, but advised customers to find other transportation.

Metro Transit spokesman John Siqveland says a decision on weekend service will be made later Friday. Officials were working on a plan for Friday's evening commute.

Amtrak trains between Fargo, North Dakota, and St. Paul are being detoured and bypassing stations in Detroit Lakes, Staples and St. Cloud. Charter buses are being used at those stations.
