MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The formal installation of the new chairman of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system will feature the start of a new tradition, the presentation of a ceremonial medallion.

The medallion is to be worn by the chancellor on special occasions, including commencements and convocations.

A MnSCU spokeswoman says the medallion and chain were designed by Todd Hawkinson, a professional jeweler and instructor at Minnesota State College - Southeast Technical in Red Wing.

The medallion was a gift to the MnSCU trustees from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Foundation, which raises private money for the system.

The installation ceremony for Chancellor Steven Rosenstone is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the state Capitol. Gov. Mark Dayton is expected to attend.
