ST. CLOUD -- Prep work is beginning on the Highway 15/33rd Street South interchange project in south St. Cloud.

City Engineer Steve Foss says they'll be clearing trees and putting up erosion barriers in the next few weeks, followed by construction bypass road to haul construction materials across Highway 15.

Foss says in early May, cranes will be brought in to start on construction of the new overpass. He also says they'll need to use explosives to blast the granite outcroppings in the area.  He says that's needed to accommodate the extension of 33rd Street but also to allow for city utilities to be placed along that corridor.

The $10.9-million project will include four roundabouts at that interchange and provide access to Highway 15 on the south end of the city.

The project is scheduled to be completed this November.
