ST. PAUL (AP) - Feeling a bit more crowded around town? That's because more people are calling Minnesota home.

A new estimate released Monday by the U.S. Census Bureau shows the state's population is still climbing. By the bureau's estimate, there were now 5,420,380 people living in Minnesota as of July 1. That's up almost 41,000 from last year's projection.

The count isn't as precise as the once-a-decade population surveys. The last one of those was done in 2010 and put the Minnesota population at 5,303,925 people.

By this year's estimate, Minnesota clocks in as the 21st most populous state. Neighboring Wisconsin comes in at No. 20 with more than 5.7 million people.
