ST. PAUL -- Minnesota's annual Take-A-Kid Fishing weekend opens Friday - the weekend when adults can fish without a license while accompanying a child younger than 16.

The Department of Natural Resources says it's designed to rekindle childhood memories, make new ones and create the next generation of anglers.

Take-A-Kid fishing weekend coincides with National Get Outdoors Day on Saturday, when admission to Minnesota state parks and recreation areas will be free. State parks will use the free weekend to launch an all-new statewide challenge called the Geocaching Avian Adventure.

Several other park systems across Minnesota are also holding family-friendly Get Outdoors events, ranging from big slates of activities at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis and Lake Minnewashta Regional Park in Chaska, to a citywide campout at Lorraine Park in South St. Paul.
