Mitchell To Be Named Interim Wolves Coach
Flip Saunders announced a few weeks ago that he had a Hodgkin's Lymphoma, which is a form of cancer. Flip originally stated that the cancer was "treatable and curable" and that he would continue to serve as both head coach and as the president of basketball operations. We are unsure how long Mitchell will be the interim head coach, but expect him to be interim at least for a couple of months.
Sam Mitchell does have experience as a head coach in the NBA. Mitchell was the head coach for the Toronto Raptors in the mid 2000's and he helped Toronto capture their first ever division title in 2006-07. He coached the Toronto Raptors to a 47-35 overall record and he was also named the NBA Coach of the Year in 2007.
Mitchell was an assistant coach last season for the Minnesota Timberwolves so he is familiar with the roster and he understands Saunders plan. The Timberwolves owner, Glen Taylor, wanted Flip to find a new head coach by the start of the 2016-17 and if Sam Mitchell has success as an interim coach, he could be the future head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
