Minnesota Student Suspended Over Tweet Wins $425K Settlement

ROGERS (AP) — A former Rogers High School student has won a $425,000 settlement after he was suspended over a tweet about a teacher.

Nineteen-year-old Reid Sagehorn sued the Elk River School District, Superintendent Mark Bezek, Rogers Police Chief Jeffrey Beahen and others in June 2014, soon after he was suspended.

One of Sagehorn's attorneys, Paul Dworak, says the settlement calls for the school district to pay Sagehorn $325,000 and the police department to pay $100,000.

Sagehorn says his tweet about making out with a 28-year-old teacher was meant to be sarcastic. But a parent saw the post and Sagehorn was suspended.

Amy Mace, an attorney for the school district, says the district did not admit any wrongdoing.

Mace says the district's insurer will pay the settlement.
