Minnesota Records First Measles Case This Year

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota has recorded its first case of measles this year.

State health officials confirmed the measles in a 19-month-old Hennepin County child.

Health agencies have notified area families and are offering immune globulin with antibodies against the measles virus to anyone who might have been exposed.

Minnesota Department of Health's infectious disease director Kris Ehresmann says any cases to result from the local child are likely to emerge between now and May 12.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 129 cases and 13 outbreaks in the nation for the first four months of 2014, the highest in that period for the past 18 years.

Measles, which has nearly been eliminated in the U.S., produces a red rash, along with cold-like symptoms.
