Minnesota National Guard Promotes First Female General

MINNEAPOLIS - An Air Force colonel has become the first female general in Minnesota's National Guard.

Sandra Best was promoted to the rank of brigadier general during a ceremony on Thursday.

Gov. Mark Dayton says in a statement that Best has proven her commitment to Minnesota and the United States during many years of dedicated service.

Best is from Minneapolis. She joined the 133rd Airlift Wing in 1984. Her service includes a tour of duty in Afghanistan with the 101st Airborne Division.

In her new role, Best will serve as the chief of staff for the Minnesota National Guard and she'll be responsible for the 133rd Airlift Wing and the 148th Fighter Wing.
