MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A 28-year-old St. Bonifacius woman has pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in the 2012 death of her toddler son.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Shacara Foster's plea Wednesday.

Foster and her 22-year-old boyfriend, Kentae Todd of Coon Rapids, were charged in the death of Foster's 18-month-old son, Cottrell Short.

Todd earlier pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison. Foster is expected to receive more than seven years in prison when she's sentenced Oct. 8.

According to the complaint, the boy died of sepsis, a blood infection caused by a severe burn on his right hand.

In her plea, Foster admitted that when she returned home she knew her son had been burned but did not check on him until hours later.
