MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A Democratic candidate for the Minnesota House has ended his campaign, hours after he sent out a tweet saying the Islamic State group "isn't necessarily evil."

Dan Kimmel announced the end of his bid for office today on his campaign website and Twitter account. He said his tweet was in response to a statement made during a candidate debate, not in response to Friday's deadly attacks in Paris.

He said the tweet was poorly worded and didn't convey his intent.

Kimmel's tweet said the extremist group "is made up of people doing what they think is best for their community." It also said "violence is not the answer."
