UNDATED -- A Minnesota tradition continues Saturday morning when an estimated 500,000 anglers take to lakes and rivers for the fishing opener.

Fisheries Chief Don Pereira says it's a special time of year.  He says "A big part of it is the tradition of it.  After a long Minnesota winter, spring is finally here, we've got the boat out and it's such a deeply rooted part of Minnesota culture.  I mean we have over 5,000 lakes that are accessible for fishing, we have 15,000 miles of streams available for fishing...it's just central to what Minnesota is about."
