Minnesota Doc Skates To Rescue After Neck Injury
EDINA (AP) — A recreational hockey player in Edina had an artery severed in his neck when another skater's blade sliced him, but a teammate was able to stabilize him until doctors could sew him up.
Tony Proel was playing at the Minnesota Made Ice Center last week when he was injured. Teammates immediately recognized it was a serious wound.
Proel didn't realize a teammate was a doctor, but he's lucky he was playing with a pediatric cardiologist. Dr. Dan Gruenstein rushed over and immediately applied pressure.
Proel was taken to a hospital, where doctors stitched up the wound.
Now he and his teammates always wear neck guards. Proel says he hopes young hockey players learn from his accident and never skate without neck guards of their own.
