MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Conference of Churches is calling for a statewide day of prayer for Sikhs after the shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

The council says it hopes next Sunday will give Christians an opportunity to pray for the victims, their families and the Sikh community in Wisconsin, Minnesota and elsewhere.

In a statement, the council also says it hopes Christians will learn more about the Sikh religion and find ways of "standing in solidarity" with the Sikh community.

Six worshippers were killed at the Sikh temple in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek, Wis., last Sunday. Police killed the 40-year-old suspect.
