Minneapolis Still Owed $303K After National Senior Games

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The National Senior Games left behind big bills after the sports festival wrapped up in Minneapolis in July.

Local organizers still owe the city $303,000 for use of the Minneapolis Convention Center.

A co-chair of the local organizing committee, Dave Mona, says they're still raising money and collecting hotel rebates to pay off roughly $500,000 in debts in all. He says fundraising proved to be challenging partly because of competing campaigns for other events such as the 2018 Super Bowl bid. He says organizers were also counting on $200,000 in state funding that was cut at the end of the legislative session.

Marc Riker, CEO of the National Senior Games Association, says local organizers are responsible for fulfilling obligations to venues and vendors.
