MINNEAPOLIS -- Minneapolis police have arrested a man who struck and killed a 16-year-old girl as he fled from officers.

Authorities say they saw the driver speeding and driving recklessly in north Minneapolis just before 10 p.m. Friday and tried to stop the vehicle. That's when police say the driver fled, striking the pedestrian. The victim was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where she died. Her name has not been released.

Police say the driver jumped out of the moving vehicle and ran away. The vehicle crashed into parked cars. Officers found a handgun in the suspect's vehicle.

Officers arrested the suspect a block away as he tried to carjack a vehicle occupied by a family. The man had two outstanding felony warrants and was taken to the hospital.
