ELK RIVER (AP) - Twin Cities Metro Transit says a commuter train has hit and killed a man walking near tracks in Elk River.

Officials say the man was hit by a Northstar train around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when he was in an area not designated for crossing. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities shut down trains going both ways and temporarily closed the tracks. Passengers on the train were transferred to another outbound train within an hour of the collision.

Authorities haven't identified the man or said why he was on the tracks.
