Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Marcellus John Michael Theisen, age 97 of Upsala will take place at 11AM, Thursday, August 7th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala. Father John Odero will officiate, and burial will take place at St. Francis of Assisi Parish Cemetery following the service. Marcellus died at the St. Cloud Hospital Sunday morning with his family by his side. There will be a visitation for Marcellus from 4-9PM Wednesday, August 6th at St. Mary’s Church in Upsala and again from 10-11AM Thursday morning once again at the church. Parish prayers will take place at 7 PM Wednesday evening at the church. Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Upsala.

Marcellus was born April 6th 1917 to Math and Catherine Theisen in Rockville Township. He married Frances Schramel on September 23rd 1941 at Lake Henry. Soon after his marriage he served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 fighting in the Pacific theater during WWII. After his time in the service, the couple lived in Cold Spring, Regal, and St. Francis before retiring to Upsala in 1982. In life, Marcellus worked as a granite cutter for Cold Spring Granite for 6 years before purchasing his land near St. Francis where he his wife Frances farmed for over 30 years. He took great pride in working his land, but what he took the most pride in was his family. He was a family man above all else and especially loved any time he got to spend with his grandchildren. He was also a very active member of his communities and church. He served as a school board member for Country School District 2056, a school board member for Upsala School System, the St. Anthony Creamery, the Treasurer for the Telephone Board in Upsala, the Holdingford Shippers Association, a member of the Holdingford VFW, the D.A.V., and was also very active in both St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala.

He is survived by his children Rich (Jeanie) Theisen, Maple Grove; John (Trish) Theisen, Sauk Rapids; Jerry (Joan) Theisen, Bowlus; Bob (Judy) Theisen, St. Francis; Leo (Janet) Theisen, Walnut Grove; Linda Theisen, Coon Rapids; Ken (Nancy) Theisen, Plymouth; his 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and his siblings Sylvester (Vera) Theisen, St. Joseph; and Delores Schwegel, Cold Spring.

He is preceded in death by his parents Math and Catherine Theisen, his wife of 70 years Frances Theisen who passed in 2011, son James Theisen who was killed in Vietnam, infant children Mary and Joseph who passed at birth, brother Elmer Theisen, and sisters Katherine Molitor, Marie Kalla, Betty Kneip, Christine Birk, Vitalia Brinkman, and Sr. Diane Theisen, OSB.
