UPDATE: Overnight Storms Drench Mankato Area

MANKATO (AP) - Another wave of heavy rain drenched southern Minnesota overnight, flooding streets in Mankato and causing mudslides that forced the closure of some highways.

The National Weather Service reports around 5 inches of rain fell in the Mankato area, overwhelming the storm sewer system. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has reopened Highway 169, but Highway 66 is blocked by mudslides between Mankato and Rapidan.

Rapidan area resident Jean Lundquist says whole fields were under water, houses in town were sitting in water, and the water was up to the bottoms of cars.

Crews inspected Mankato's flood walls Wednesday morning.

Successive storms since last weekend have soaked farm fields across southern Minnesota, raising concerns about potential crop damage.

More rain, hail and wind is in the forecast through this coming weekend.
