MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A Twin Cities man in prison for killing the mother of his daughter wants to keep his parental rights.

Tyler Wicklund is serving a life sentence for slitting the throat of 20-year-old Jessica Buboltz nearly three years ago in her Kasota apartment. Police said their then 1-year old daughter was inside when it happened.

Buboltz's mother Dawn Buboltz is now raising the girl and wants to adopt her.

Wicklund's attorney argues his actions don't make him an unfit parent. He wants the freedom to send the girl letters and talk to her on the phone from behind bars.

The grandmother is fighting that.

Reports say a judge is expected to make a decision in September.

Wicklund could be eligible for parole in 30 years.
