VIRGINIA, Minn. (AP) - A Babbitt man has been sentenced to more than 27 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing his mother's boyfriend last year.

Twenty-six-year-old Shawn Doherty was sentenced Thursday under a plea agreement. The St. Louis County Attorney's office says Doherty was given credit for the 480 days he already has spent in jail.

Doherty pleaded guilty last month to intentional second-degree murder. He admitted that he killed 55-year-old Paul Bulen of Mahtomedi at the home of Doherty's mother in Babbitt on Jan. 13, 2014.

Bulen was strangled. He was found unconscious outside the home dressed only in underwear and a T-shirt, and was later pronounced dead.

According to court documents, Doherty told his mother he thought her boyfriend was coming between them.
