Man Pleads Guilty to Killing Infant in Ramsey County

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A man has pleaded guilty in Ramsey County to killing his girlfriend's 3-month-old baby.

A criminal complaint says 28-year-old Austin Gustafson was caring for the child in White Bear Lake while her mother was at work in April 2014. Gustafson initially told investigators he found the infant in her crib and she wasn't breathing. An autopsy later revealed the baby had been smothered.

Reports say Gustafson was charged with second-degree murder, but agreed to plead guilty to manslaughter which cuts 25 years from a maximum sentence.

Gustafson is scheduled back in court Feb. 18 for sentencing.
