Man Hurt While Cycling in Bike Across Minnesota Event

PAYNESVILLE — A Bemidji man had to be airlifted to the hospital after he was struck by a car while riding his bike near Paynesville today.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says 55-year-old Gerald Johnson was biking as part of the “Bike Around Minnesota” event when he was struck on County Road 16 just after 9:00 a.m.

Authorities say the driver of the car, 22-year-old Josie Magnan of Paynesville failed to stop at the intersection of county road 16 and 293rd Avenue and struck Johnson with her car.

Johnson was given medical treatment at the scene, then airlifted to St. Cloud hospital.

Magnan was treated at the scene.

The “Bike Around Minnesota” event is designed to promote cycling and teach cyclists and motorists to share the road.
