ST. CLOUD -  The Lupine Brewing Co. is gaining popularity in St. Cloud and throughout Minnesota.

Lupine started operating late last year and has their beers available locally at the Boulder Tap House, Old Chicago, D.B. Searles, MC's Dugout, G-Allen's in Sartell and Old Capital Tavern in Sauk Rapids. Lupine brews are also being offered at locations in Long Lake, Otsego, Hanover, Savage, Roseville and Minneapolis.

James Anderle and Eric Sargent with Lupine Brewing say craft beers are gaining popularity.

"It's really growing in Minnesota so we made a decision to just go for it and we spent about six months after that decision researching the industry,"  Anderle says.

The brewery is at 3310 third street north, which used to be home to O’Hara’s Brewpub and Restaurant. Lupine is applying for liquor licenses to sell 64-ounce growlers and offer 3-ounce samples at their taproom. The St. Cloud city council will review the request on February 23rd.

"We're going to have a tasting room up front-people can come in and buy growlers, take them home with them and enjoy our beer, finish them, rinse them and then take them back here and we'll fill them up again," Anderle says.

Lupine offers two different pale ales, a brown ale and a unique cranberry oatmeal stout. Sargent says the cranberry oatmeal stout was a big hit at the St. Cloud Beer Fest and the St. Paul Winter Carnival.

"It's like having Thanksgiving in a cup," Sargent says.

Lupine is also working on a secret stout that will be released at the end of the month.

Sargent says Lupine is focusing on providing a fresh-local beer option for area bars and restaurants.

"We're 3-4 blocks away from some of the establishments, it doesn't get any fresher than that," Sargent says.
