Local Tech Student Wins Minnesota Youth Of The Year

ST. PAUL — Boys and Girls Club of Central Minnesota member, Jerry Akubue was named the 2013 Minnesota State Youth of the Year yesterday (Tuesday).

He won an $11,000 scholarship and a chance to compete at the Midwest regional Youth of the Year Competition.

Aimee Minnerath is the Marketing Manager at the Boys and Girls Club of Central Minnesota. She says the Midwest competition is similar to the state contest, but the competition gets steeper.

Minnerath says when Akubue speaks it’s almost presidential.

Akubue will now compete for a $25,000 scholarship and a chance to advance to the national Youth of the Year competition in Washington D.C.

The Midwest Regional Youth of the Year competition will be held in Chicago July 15th through the 18th.
