UNDATED -- Five local police departments are giving you an opportunity to educate you what a job in law enforcement is all about.

St. Cloud, Sartell, St. Joseph, Waite Park and Sauk Rapids are accepting applications for the 2014 class of the Metro Citizens Police Academy.

Sauk Rapids Police Chief Perry Beise says the academy provides you with first-had experience in many areas of police training.

Classes begin the first Thursday after Labor Day, September 4th, and run for eight weeks to October 23rd.

The eight week course consists of classroom work and other training curriculum that police officers experience. All taught by the five area police departments.

You can pick up an application for the Citizens Police Academy at any of the five police departments or on their websites. Deadline to apply is August 15th.

Beise says the Citizen's Police Academy is solely informative and in no way trains or promotes citizens to act in a law enforcement capacity.

Instead the academy is design to educate those that attend.

The academy will be head at the Sauk Rapids Police Department from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Background checks will be done for all applicants before attending the academy. Applicants must also reside within the city limits of the police department they are applying.
