ST. PAUL (AP) - School officials say a loaded handgun was recovered from a student's backpack at St. Paul's Harding High School.

Superintendent Valeria Silva told a news conference Wednesday the student brought the backpack into a classroom, but had "no intention of using the gun."

In a letter to families, Principal Douglas Revsbeck said no threats were made to students or staff.

Revsbeck told reporters that a teacher had alerted school administrators to the student because of a smell of marijuana, and that a search of the backpack for the drug uncovered both the marijuana and the gun.

Police arrested the student.
