Leech Lake, Canterbury Reach Simulcast Agreement

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A horse race track in the Twin Cities area has reached agreement with the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe to offer simulcast wagering on races at the tribe's casino in northern Minnesota.

The band's five-year agreement with Canterbury Park in Shakopee is made possible by legislation passed in 2012 that allows Minnesota tribes that currently operate casino gaming to simulcast horse racing telecasts from around the world.

Officials say money wagered on the simulcast races at the Northern Lights Casino in Walker, Minn., will go toward improvements on Ojibwe land and partially fund live racing purses at Canterbury Park.

The agreement is subject to approval from the National Indian Gaming Commission and the Minnesota Racing Commission.
