John Warren Gates, age 70, of Princeton, passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2014. He was born on December 15, 1943 in Princeton, MN the son of John Warren and Dorothea (Kresal) Gates.

John grew up on the family farm in Princeton and graduated from Princeton High School in 1961. John entered the United States Navy following graduation and served for three years as an instrument repairman. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy he worked at the Typewriter Shop in St. Cloud and then attended St. Cloud State University receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts. He taught Industrial Arts in Long Prairie for 10 years and then worked at Litton Industries before returning to teaching in the suburbs of the Twin Cities until his retirement.

In his spare time John enjoyed working with wood, photography, guitar, singing and music and tinkering with things. John loved his family farm, being outdoors and most of all spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

John is survived by his children, Brian (Stacie) of Osceola, WI, Aimee (Michael) Wagner of Eden Prairie, Eric (Sarah) of Menomonie, WI, Kari Gates of Duluth and John Michael (Kelli) of Billings, MT; grandchildren, Joshua, Elise, Anna, Talia and Karis; Miquela, Maran, Ava, Nora and Sophia; Broderic, Logan and Porter; and Evan, Logan, Aaron, and Atlantis; siblings, Marlene Christiansen of Falcon Heights, Bonnie (Rodger) Gustafson of Princeton, Duane (Patricia) Gates of Big Lake; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
