Jewish Group Opposes Minnesota Same-Sex Marriage Ban
MINNETONKA (AP) — A Jewish group says a proposed state constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and woman conflicts with Jewish tradition.
Jewish Community Action invited hundreds of people to an event in Minnetonka on Sunday to build support for a campaign against the amendment by using ancient Jewish texts from the Torah, which organizers say teaches Jews to pursue justice and to uphold the dignity of each person.
The event had 18 co-sponsors including most of the area's conservative and reformed Jewish congregations.
The orthodox Kenesseth Israel Congregation in St Louis Park wasn't among them. Rabbi Chaim Goldberger says the Torah's message is clear and shouldn't be distorted. He says marriage is a sacred ideal that only exists between a man and a woman.
