Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 22, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rice for Janet T. Bender, age 86, of Rice who died Saturday at Country Manor Health Care Center in Sartell. Rev. Thomas Becker will officiate and burial will be in St. Marcus Cemetery in Clear Lake. Friends and relatives may call from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the church in Rice. Parish prayers will be at 5:00 p.m. followed by Christian Women praying the rosary at 6:30 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Sauk Rapids.

Janet Therese Bender was born May 9, 1928 in Royalton Township of Pine County, MN to David & Anna (Rothenbacher) Pranghofer. She graduated from Grasston High School and received a teaching certificate from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. While visiting her older sister in Clear Lake, MN Janet met Eugene Bender, who lived on the neighboring farm, and they were married on June 25, 1951. The couple had 6 children, and lived in and around Sherburne and Benton counties, most recently in Rice. Janet taught elementary school for many years before staying home to raise children. She continued to teach others as a volunteer at her church and at the local elementary school. Janet was known for her quick wit and her love of books, movies and plays, which she passed on to her children. She was a resident of Country Manor in Sartell since 2006. Janet was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she was a lector and was involved in Christian Women, Finance Committee and Religious Education.

Survivors include her children, David (Joan) Bender of Clear Lake, Bette Bender of Richfield, Marie (Eugene) Harms of West Des Moines, IA, Marian Bender of Folsom, CA, Michelle Iten of Ft. Worth, TX; son-in-law, Douglas Bieber of Fargo, ND and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene on October 12, 2009; daughter, Annette; sister, Mildred and brother, Lawrence.
