ST. CLOUD -- The St. Cloud State men's hockey team knocked off the University of Alabama in Huntsville at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center Friday night 5-1.

The Huskies broke open a tie game early in the third period by scoring three goals in less than 90 seconds.

The Huskies took a 1-0 lead after the first period on a goal by Jake Wahlin, but remained tied 1-1 after two periods. Then, early in the 3rd period freshman Ryan Poehling got his first collegiate goal to put the Huskies up 2-1. It was the eventual game winner.

Two more goals came quickly as Judd Peterson and Patrick Newell lit the lamp to put the Huskies up 4-1. Blake Winiecki then finished the scoring for the Huskies who improve to 3-2 on the year.

Goaltender Jeff Smith got his first collegiate win with 15 saves on the night.

The Huskies and Chargers meet again Saturday night at the Herb Brooks Center at 7:07 p.m.
