HASTINGS (AP) - A candidate for the Minnesota House has been arrested on suspicion of domestic assault and strangulation.

Republican District 51A candidate Brad Gerten, of Burnsville, was booked into the Dakota County Jail early Sunday. Online records show Gerten remained jailed Monday. No formal charges have been filed. Gerten did not immediately respond to a call from The Associated Press for comment.

Republican House Speaker Kurt Daudt said in a statement Monday "Domestic violence is unacceptable to our party and our caucus."

Details of what led to Gerten's arrest were not immediately available. Gerten's campaign website says he served 22 years in the military and was deployed to Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan before retiring.
