ROCHESTER (AP) — Rochester police say a handcuffed man jumped into the Zumbro River as he tried to evade officers.

Police were called to a fight in a downtown hotel ramp early Saturday. When officers arrived, they found several men who had been fighting. Police handcuffed a 23-year-old Racine man so they could talk with others.

Police Sgt. Tony Teal says as officers talked, the handcuffed man sneaked away, scrambled over a small parking ramp wall and jumped several feet into the Zumbro River. The man crossed the river but was caught by another officer on the other side.

The cold and wet man was taken to Mayo Clinic. He was ticketed for disorderly conduct and fleeing police on foot, and released.
